Make your own Apple sauce

Make your own Apple sauce

  • 4 large Granny Smith apples

  • 4 large Honeycrisp apples

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice (from about 1/2 a lemon)

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Actually really simple.

  • Peel and core your apples. (the hardest part!) If you don’t want to peel them, you can just core them and boil, then strain later.

  • Chop into smaller pieces (quarters or smaller is fine)

  • Place apples in a bowl with a little water, just enough to prevent from sticking, plus some lemon juice. Throw in the bowl as you chop them to keep the colors bright.

  • Add the apple pieces to a pot of boiling water

    • Instant pot method: Toss the apples in water, cinnamon and lemon juice, and cook them on manual or high pressure for 8 minutes.

  • Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 20 min, until they can be mashed with a fork.

    • can add a little sweetener here if you like, but this is actually what I use to sweeten OTHER dishes. Melt the sweetener into the mushy apple water.

  • Remove from heat, and blend or mash apples. I like to throw in a blender with some cinnamon.

  • Serve warm or chilled.

Note: If canning, sterilize your jars. Set jars in the canner, add water, and boil jars for 10 minutes to sterilize. Warm your lids in a small pot over low heat. Keep jars and lids warm until ready to use.
