Make your own Apple sauce
4 large Granny Smith apples
4 large Honeycrisp apples
1 cup water
1 Tablespoon fresh lemon juice (from about 1/2 a lemon)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Peel and core your apples. (the hardest part!) If you don’t want to peel them, you can just core them and boil, then strain later.
Chop into smaller pieces (quarters or smaller is fine)
Place apples in a bowl with a little water, just enough to prevent from sticking, plus some lemon juice. Throw in the bowl as you chop them to keep the colors bright.
Add the apple pieces to a pot of boiling water
Instant pot method: Toss the apples in water, cinnamon and lemon juice, and cook them on manual or high pressure for 8 minutes.
Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 20 min, until they can be mashed with a fork.
can add a little sweetener here if you like, but this is actually what I use to sweeten OTHER dishes. Melt the sweetener into the mushy apple water.
Remove from heat, and blend or mash apples. I like to throw in a blender with some cinnamon.
Serve warm or chilled.
Note: If canning, sterilize your jars. Set jars in the canner, add water, and boil jars for 10 minutes to sterilize. Warm your lids in a small pot over low heat. Keep jars and lids warm until ready to use.
